NASSCOM said that the domestic IT-BPO revenues excluding hardware are expected to have grown at almost 16 per cent to reach US$ 17.35 billion in FY2011.

Poised to become a US$ 225 billion industry by 2020, the Indian information technology (IT) industry has played a key role in putting India on the global map.

The IT-BPO sector has become one of the most significant growth catalysts for the Indian economy.

The IT industry has played a significant role in transforming India’s image from a slow moving bureaucratic economy to a land of innovative entrepreneurs and a global player.

 The sector is estimated to have grown by 19 percent in the FY2011, clocking revenue of almost US$ 76 billion.

The export revenues are estimated to have aggregated to US$ 59 billion in FY2011 and contributed 26 percent as its share in total Indian exports. Strategic Review 2011’, published by NASSCOM

The workforce in Indian IT industry will touch 30 million by 2020 and this sunrise industry is expected to continue its mammoth growth, expect various industry experts.

India will see its number of internet users triple to 237 million by 2015, from 81 million registered in September 2010,  Boston Consulting Group- BCG said Internet penetration rate in India is expected to reach 19 percent by 2015, up from the current seven percent.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is targeting a 10-fold increase in broadband subscribers to 100 million by 2014. The country has 10.29million subscribers now. (Chairman, TRAI) The penetration of the internet in rural areas will see an all-time high in 2011.

The IT industry has great scope for people as it provides employment to technical and non-technical graduates and has the capability to generate huge foreign exchange inflow for India. India exports softwares and services to approximately 95 countries in the world. By outsourcing to India, many countries get benefits in terms of labour costs and business processes. Also, the Indian companies are broadening the range of services being provided to the customers, which is resulting in more off shoring. Talent acquisition, development and retention initiatives taken by the companies have brought down the employee attrition rates, thereby providing more stability to the employees and increasing their job commitment.

Many financial institutions are providing funds for the expansion of IT and ITeS businesses. In order to support IT and ITES, the Indian Government is also taking many steps. 



IT will continue to gain momentum; telecom and wireless will follow the trend. The immense expansion in networking technologies is expected to continue into the next decade also. IT will bring about a drastic improvement in the quality of life as it impacts application domains and global competitiveness. Technologies that are emerging are Data Warehousing and Data Mining. They involve collecting data to find patterns and testing hypothesis in normal research. Software services that are being used in outsourcing will go a long way.
